Newcastle End Trophy Drought with Carabao Cup Victory Over Liverpool

Newcastle United secured their first domestic trophy in 70 years, and their first major trophy since 1969, with a deserved 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sealed a historic win for Eddie Howe’s side, ending a run of nine successive Wembley defeats.

Newcastle took the lead in first-half stoppage time. Dan Burn, fresh from his first England call-up, rose highest to meet a Kieran Trippier corner, taking advantage of slack Liverpool marking.

Alexander Isak doubled Newcastle’s advantage in the 52nd minute, finishing clinically after a knockdown from Jacob Murphy.

Liverpool, who were eliminated from the Champions League by Paris St-Germain on penalties in midweek, pulled a goal back in injury time through substitute Federico Chiesa. The goal was initially checked by VAR for offside, creating a tense finish, but was ultimately awarded.

Howe’s Heroes Make History

The final whistle was met with scenes of jubilation from Newcastle supporters, celebrating the end of a long wait for silverware. The victory ensures a place in Europe next season for the magpies.

Newcastle were the superior side for the majority of the match, displaying greater energy and threat than a lackluster Liverpool. Joelinton produced a standout performance in midfield, dominating the central areas and disrupting Liverpool’s rhythm.

Burn’s goal capped a memorable week for the boyhood Newcastle fan, while Isak’s well-taken strike further underlined his importance to the team.

Lackluster Liverpool’s Week of Disappointment

The defeat completes a disappointing week for Liverpool, following their Champions League exit. Despite their commanding lead in the Premier League, their hopes of adding further trophies this season have been significantly diminished.

Liverpool looked tired and lacked their usual intensity. Mohamed Salah was effectively contained by Tino Livramento, and the midfield was overpowered by Newcastle’s energetic display. The defending for Burn’s opening goal was particularly poor, with the tall defender left unmarked at the corner, with Alexis Mac Allister closest in attendance.

Manager Arne Slot will hope the international break allows his squad to regroup and refocus as they look to secure a record-equaling 20th league title. The Carabao Cup final defeat, however, highlighted a vulnerability and lack of spark that will concern Liverpool supporters.
