Nottingham Forest have appointed former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach, following the departure of Nuno Espírito Santo. The club confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, marking the return of the 60-year-old Australian to Premier League management.
Postecoglou takes over from Espírito Santo, who was dismissed after 21 months in charge and just three games into the new Premier League season. Espírito Santo’s final match was a 3-0 defeat to West Ham United before the international break. While the club sits 10th in the table, the Portuguese manager’s position had been uncertain amid reports of a strained relationship with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.
In a statement, Marinakis praised Postecoglou, citing his “proven and consistent record of winning trophies.” The owner added that Postecoglou’s “experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey.”
Postecoglou’s last role was at Tottenham Hotspur, where he was dismissed at the end of the previous season after the team finished 17th in the Premier League. However, he concluded his tenure on a high note by leading Spurs to a historic Europa League victory, ending the club’s long-standing trophy drought.
Espírito Santo, 51, originally took charge of Forest in December 2023, succeeding Steve Cooper. He successfully guided the club to Premier League safety and, in the 2024-25 season, led them to a seventh-place finish, their highest since the 1994-95 season, securing European football for the first time in three decades. The swift change has reportedly surprised some of the Forest players, many of whom are currently on international duty.
Postecoglou becomes the eighth permanent manager since Marinakis took ownership of the club in May 2017. His first match in charge will be an away trip to face Arsenal on Saturday.
