The Oman Football Association has appointed veteran manager Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of its national team, tasking the former Real Madrid and Portugal boss with guiding the country through the final stages of qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, confirming Queiroz will take charge for the decisive fourth round of Asia’s World Cup qualifiers. Oman secured their spot in the next phase after finishing fourth in their third-round group, clinching their place with a 1-1 draw against Palestine.
“Queiroz has extensive coaching experience, having led the national teams of Portugal, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, and Qatar. He also served as an assistant coach at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson,” the Oman FA said in a statement on the social media platform X.
The federation also thanked the previous coaching staff, led by national coach Rashid Jaber, for their efforts.
Queiroz, 72, brings a wealth of international tournament experience to the role. His immediate task will be to prepare the team for the fourth-round draw, which takes place on July 17. Oman will be in the draw alongside fellow hopefuls Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates as they compete for a place at the finals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
