Victor Osimhen marked his return to Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign with a brace, leading the Super Eagles to a 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali. The win, Éric Sékou Chelle’s first as Nigeria coach, provides a much-needed boost after a slow start to their 2026 qualifying journey.
Nigeria started strongly, dominating possession and pinning Rwanda back. The breakthrough came after Moses Simon was fouled on the edge of the area. Ademola Lookman delivered perfect ball, which Osimhen met at far post.
Rwanda attempted to respond before halftime, applying pressure as they sought an equalizer. However, this proved to be their undoing. With Rwandan players committed forward, Osimhen found himself isolated against a single defender. He stretched his leg to control, before scoring.
The second half saw no further goals, securing a crucial three points for Nigeria and a promising start for Chelle’s tenure.
Osimhen’s Impact and Record Chase
Osimhen’s performance highlighted his importance to the Super Eagles. Prior to this match, Nigeria had struggled for goals in his absence, scoring only once in each of their previous four qualifiers. Osimhen’s brace showcased his clinical finishing and his ability to exploit defensive vulnerabilities.
Beyond his goals, Osimhen displayed leadership qualities, defending from the front and urging his teammates to maintain their focus. He was seen defending corners, and directing Ademola Lookman.
The goals also moved Osimhen into sole second place on Nigeria’s all-time scoring list with 25 goals, surpassing Segun Odegbami. He now trails only Rashidi Yekini, who holds the record with 37 goals.
“I am very happy for the goals,” Osimhen said after the game. “Now the focus is on Zimbabwe so we keep going.”
The victory provides a platform for Chelle to build upon, while Osimhen’s return and scoring form offer significant encouragement for Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying aspirations.
