Portugal secured their place in the Euro 2024 knockout stage as group winners with a commanding 3-0 victory over Turkey in Dortmund. Bernardo Silva’s clinical first-half strike, a calamitous own goal by Samet Akaydin, and a tap-in from Bruno Fernandes (courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s unselfish assist) sealed the win for the 2016 champions.
The match was a display of Portugal’s quality, with fluid passing and composure throughout. Silva, Vitinha, Joao Cancelo, and Nuno Mendes were particularly impressive, while Ronaldo’s selfless assist drew praise from manager Roberto Martinez.
“I saw today something that is spectacular, to have Ronaldo, who is an out-and-out goalscorer, looking for the assist,” said Martinez. “It is an example that should be shown in every academy in Portugal.”
Turkey, despite their passionate support, struggled to contain Portugal’s attack and were punished for defensive errors. They still have a chance to qualify when they face the Czech Republic in their final group match.
“We had our own opportunities and were punished at the first mistake,” said Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella. “It was a balanced game until the first goal… They were much more clinical and that made the difference.”
Portugal’s victory was marred by several pitch invasions by fans seeking selfies with Ronaldo, an issue that marred an otherwise impressive display. With their group stage campaign complete, Portugal now turns their attention to their next opponent, Georgia, while Turkey will fight to keep their knockout stage dreams alive.
