The Premier League will pay tribute to the late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, with a moment of silence to be observed before all opening-round fixtures this weekend. Players will also wear black armbands in memory of the pair, who were killed in a car accident in Spain in July.
The league announced on Tuesday that the tributes were organised following consultation with Liverpool FC to ensure the most appropriate form of remembrance.
“As a mark of respect, all Premier League matches on the opening weekend will be preceded by a period of silence in memory of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva,” the league confirmed in a statement.
In addition to the pre-match silence and black armbands for all players, clubs will be provided with official messaging and imagery to display on stadium screens.
The league-wide remembrance follows a tribute held before Sunday’s FA Community Shield match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium. During that ceremony, wreaths were laid on the pitch and a period of silence was observed before kick-off.
The pre-match tribute at Wembley was audibly disrupted by a minority of spectators, an action that drew a strong negative reaction from other fans in the stadium.
