Paris St-Germain advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals, defeating Liverpool on penalties after a 1-0 victory on the night, resulting in a 1-1 aggregate draw. The dramatic shootout victory at Anfield saw PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma emerge as the hero, saving penalties from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones before Desire Doue converted the winning spot-kick.
PSG, needing to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit, started strongly. Ousmane Dembele gave them the lead in the 12th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. A routine cross from Bradley Barcola was misjudged by Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, who knocked the ball away from goalkeeper Alisson, allowing Dembele to score from close range.
PSG created further chances in the first half, with Alisson saving from Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia firing off target. Liverpool, despite a fast start where Mohamed Salah had two opportunities, were largely second-best in the opening 45 minutes.
The home side improved in the second half, applying sustained pressure. However, they struggled to break down a resolute PSG defense. Donnarumma produced a fine save to claw away Luis Diaz’s header, while substitute Jarell Quansah struck the post, and Dominik Szoboszlai had a goal disallowed for offside.
PSG were the stronger side in extra time, with Alisson making a magnificent save to deny Dembele. The match ultimately went to penalties, where Donnarumma, reprising his Euro 2020 final heroics, proved decisive.
Liverpool’s European Dreams Dashed
Liverpool players were visibly distraught at the final whistle, their Champions League aspirations ended in a heartbreaking penalty shootout. The defeat represents a major setback for manager Arne Slot, whose team had been in imperious form, leading the Premier League by 15 points.
Ironically, Liverpool performed better in defeat at Anfield than in their first-leg victory in Paris. However, unlike the first leg, luck didn’t favour them this time.
Liverpool now face a quick turnaround, with the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday. The Champions League exit will undoubtedly sting, as the club had ambitions far beyond the last 16.
PSG’s Evolution Under Luis Enrique
PSG’s victory at Anfield demonstrates their growing maturity and cohesion under manager Luis Enrique. Having dominated the first leg but ultimately losing, they showed resilience and tactical flexibility to secure progress in the tie.
PSG’s approach represents a shift away from the “Bling Bling” era of star signings like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar towards a more balanced and team-oriented approach. The performances of Dembele, finally fulfilling his potential, and new signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia highlight the effectiveness of this new strategy. Donnarumma, despite a mixed performance overall, proved his quality in the crucial penalty shootout. PSG shape up as a serious title contender.
