Real Madrid lifted the UEFA Youth League title in their first final after a thrilling 3-2 win against Benfica.
Raúl González’s men led 2-0 and 3-1 but had to hang on as Gonçalo Ramos’s second goal hauled the Portuguese side back into the contest before Luis López saved a Tiago Dantas penalty to seal victory.
Real jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals by Pablo Delgado and an own goal from Henrique Jocu, while Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos made it 2-1 early in the second half with his goal. Miguel Gutierrez scored a minute later to restore Real’s two-goal lead with the team coached by club legend Raul hanging on to the victory.
This was Real Madrid’s first Youth League title since the tournament began in 2013. Real had made it to the semifinals three times prior, with this being their first final appearance. Benfica have made the final three times, losing each.
The last two round of 16 ties, and the remainder of the competition, were played between 16 and 25 August at Colovray Stadium, Nyon. All matches were played behind closed doors.
