Real Madrid Survive Scare to Reach Copa del Rey Semi-finals

Real Madrid narrowly avoided an upset in the Copa del Rey, defeating Leganes 3-2 thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Gonzalo García. The victory sends Real Madrid into the semi-finals of the competition, where they will face one of Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Barcelona, or Valencia.

Real Madrid took a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from Luka Modric and Endrick. However, Leganes fought back with two goals from Juan Cruz, leveling the score before García’s late header secured the win for Real Madrid.

This victory was a testament to Real Madrid’s resilience and their ability to overcome adversity. They were without several key defenders due to injury and rested some regular starters ahead of their upcoming La Liga derby against Atlético Madrid. Despite these challenges, they found a way to win and progress in the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti expressed his relief at securing the victory, highlighting the importance of the win after their recent defeat to Espanyol in La Liga.

“It was a difficult game, but we showed character to come back and win,” Ancelotti said. “We are happy to be in the semi-finals and we will be giving everything to reach the final.

Leganes, who are struggling in La Liga, will be proud of their performance against Real Madrid. They pushed the reigning Copa del Rey champions all the way and were unfortunate not to secure a draw.

Real Madrid will now turn their attention to their La Liga clash against Atlético Madrid on Saturday, where they will be looking to maintain their lead at the top of the table. They will then face one of Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Barcelona, or Valencia in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.
