Salah makes history with third PFA Player of the Year award

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been named the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Men’s Player of the Year for a record third time, while Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers collected the Young Player of the Year award at a ceremony in London on Tuesday.

Former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate was also honoured, receiving the PFA Merit Award for his outstanding contribution to football.

Salah, 33, becomes the first player in history to win the prestigious award on three occasions. The Egyptian international was instrumental in Liverpool’s 2024-25 Premier League title triumph, finishing as the league’s top scorer with 29 goals and providing 18 assists.

He topped a shortlist that included teammate Alexis Mac Allister, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice.

Rogers, 23, was recognised for a stellar breakthrough season at Aston Villa following his move from Middlesbrough in February 2024. The midfielder scored 14 goals in 54 appearances, helping Villa to a sixth-place league finish and deep runs in the Champions League and FA Cup. His form also earned him a senior England debut in November.

“Later down the line, I want to be one of those incredible players people speak about,” Rogers told BBC Sport after receiving his award. “It’s a nice recognition but there’s more to win and I can’t wait.”

Southgate received the Merit Award for his transformative eight-year tenure as England manager from 2016 to 2024, during which he led the nation to the finals of Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, as well as a World Cup semi-final in 2018.
