Aitana Bonmati proved the difference in a tightly contested Euro 2025 semi-final, scoring in the 113th minute to give Spain a 1-0 victory over Germany and set up a final rematch with England.
The Barcelona midfielder collected the ball in a crowded penalty area, executed a sharp turn, and fired a low shot past Ann-Katrin Berger to break the deadlock in extra time.
The match had been goalless after 90 minutes despite chances for both sides. Berger made crucial saves and was aided by the woodwork in denying Spain, while Germany’s Klara Buhl and Giovanna Hoffmann failed to convert promising opportunities in the first half.
Spain controlled 66.9% of possession but struggled to break down a disciplined German defense that had already shown remarkable resilience in their quarter-final win over France, where they played over 100 minutes with 10 players.
Germany came closest to winning in normal time when Buhl’s deflected effort in the dying minutes forced an acrobatic save from Cata Coll, who also blocked Carlotta Wamser’s follow-up attempt. But Bonmati, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, ultimately decided the match with a moment of individual brilliance.
Historic Victory
The result marked Spain’s first-ever win against Germany at the ninth attempt, having previously recorded three draws and five defeats. It also ended Germany’s remarkable streak of seven consecutive Women’s Euro semi-final victories dating back to 1993.
Key Performers
Bonmati’s decisive contribution underlined her status as the world’s premier player, while substitute Salma Paralluelo added energy to Spain’s attack after her introduction. For Germany, Buhl stood out with her defensive work rate and threatening counter-attacks. Berger’s 23 saves in the tournament remained a competition high, though she was finally beaten when it mattered most.
Final Showdown
Spain will now face England in Sunday’s final at Basel’s St Jakob-Park, a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final which Spain won 1-0. Germany exit the tournament but will return to competitive action in October’s Nations League semi-finals against France.
