Everton were on the brink of their first league win of the season against Bournemouth, the cherries leading 2-0 with just minutes left. But in a dramatic collapse, they conceded three late goals and lost 3-2, leaving manager Sean Dyche stunned.
The Toffees had controlled most of the match and seemed set for victory until the 87th minute, when Antoine Semenyo started Bournemouth’s comeback by finishing off a cross from Dango Ouattara to make it 2-1. Five minutes later, with Everton still reeling, Bournemouth captain Lewis Cook was left unmarked in the box and headed home a perfect cross from Luis Sinisterra to level the score.
The nightmare for Everton was complete in the 96th minute. Jordan Pickford could only watch as Sinisterra, left unmarked again, nodded in a cross from Justin Kluivert to secure all three points for Bournemouth. The extraordinary turnaround left Everton’s players slumped on the Goodison Park turf as boos rang out around the stadium.
This defeat marks Everton’s sixth straight loss under Sean Dyche in August, highlighting a worrying trend for the club. Despite showing some improvement in their overall play, their inability to manage the game in its final stages proved costly. Dyche made two changes to his starting lineup, bringing back Seamus Coleman at right-back and handing Iliman Ndiaye his Premier League debut, but these efforts were undone by a lack of defensive discipline.
Bournemouth, meanwhile, celebrated a remarkable win, with new signing Kepa Arrizabalaga making crucial saves to keep them in the game. The Cherries’ late surge showed their resilience, with Sinisterra and Semenyo playing key roles in a match that will be remembered for its stunning conclusion.
For Everton, this collapse is a stark reminder of the challenges they face this season. As they look to bounce back from another disappointing result, questions will linger about their ability to close out games and secure much-needed points.
