The former Arsenal and Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault.
The 32-year-old is accused of five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences are said to have taken place between 2021 and 2022.
Partey spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood his bail conditions during the brief hearing. He was formally charged in early July, shortly after his contract with the north London club expired at the end of the season.
The conditions of his bail stipulate that he must not contact any of the three complainants and is required to notify the police of any permanent change of address or plans for international travel.
The charges are the result of an investigation by detectives that began in February 2022.
In a statement provided prior to the hearing, Partey’s lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, confirmed he “denies all the charges against him” and welcomed “the opportunity to finally clear his name.”
Mr Partey is next scheduled to appear in court at the Old Bailey on 2 September.
