Tuchel Defends Tactics Over England’s Approach in Argentina Defeat

Thomas Tuchel insists he has “no regrets” about England’s tactical approach despite suffering a heartbreaking late collapse against Argentina in their World Cup semi-final.

The Three Lions held a precious lead deep into the closing stages at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium before the defending champions struck twice in the 85th and 92nd minutes to snatch a 2-1 victory. England’s decision to drop deep and protect their lead drew fierce criticism from high-profile pundits, including former captain Wayne Rooney on the BBC, alongside Fox analysts Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimović.

However, a defiant Tuchel took full responsibility for the exit while heavily praising his players. “You can discuss this with a million coaches, but I have to make a decision on the pitch,” Tuchel told the BBC. “I analysed the match and I did it a certain way, so that’s my responsibility. In the moment, no regrets. The team gave everything and we were very, very close. We deserved to be up 1-0.”

Tuchel Explains Defensive Shift to a Back Five

Anthony Gordon had ignited dreams of a final when he smarty finished a Morgan Rogers cross ten minutes into the second half. Seeking to fortify the advantage, Tuchel withdrew the goalscorer after 72 minutes for defender Ezri Konsa, shifting to a rigid back five before later introducing Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly. The defensive wall ultimately crumbled under a relentless aerial assault as Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez struck late.

Defending his changes, Tuchel explained that the substitution was a direct reaction to the pressure his side faced immediately after taking the lead. “We decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open,” the German manager told Fox. “They won every header; they kept crossing and crossing. Straight after our goal, with no substitutions, we just conceded way too many crosses and way too many chances. We tried to help, but if it doesn’t go well, it’s easy to say it was wrong.”

Focus Shifts to France and Euro 2028 Blueprint

Despite the tactical fallout, Tuchel maintained that the performance against the world champions was arguably England’s finest hour under his tenure given the demanding circumstances of their North American campaign. The squad has navigated immense travel miles, extreme heat, and altitude games—including playing with ten men in an intense last-16 encounter against Mexico.

When questioned about his future with the national team during the post-match press conference, Tuchel gave a short, direct response regarding his commitment to the FA. “There’s still another game to play,” he stated. “We’re not looking forward to it perhaps, but we are under contract until the home Euros in 2028.”

England must now quickly dust themselves down for a swift turnaround. The Three Lions travel to Miami on Saturday for a third-place play-off against traditional rivals France, while Argentina march on to face European champions Spain in Sunday’s grand finale.
