UEFA confirmed on Thursday, March 27th, that it has opened an investigation into allegations of indecent conduct involving four Real Madrid players – Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr, and Dani Ceballos – following their Champions League last-16 victory over Atletico Madrid.
The investigation stems from incidents that occurred after Real Madrid defeated their city rivals in a penalty shootout to advance to the quarter-finals. According to television footage and Spanish media reports, German defender Rüdiger appeared to make a throat-slitting gesture towards the crowd, while Mbappé was seen seemingly making a crotch-grabbing gesture.
The specific allegations regarding Vinícius Jr and Ceballos were not detailed in UEFA’s initial statement. Atletico Madrid reportedly filed a complaint with UEFA last week regarding the players’ actions.
UEFA stated: “[An] ethics and disciplinary inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct” made by the four Real Madrid players. “Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”
The players could face suspensions if found guilty. However, there is uncertainty whether the case will be concluded before Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final tie against Arsenal.
The first leg is scheduled for April 8th at the Emirates Stadium, with the return leg a week later. Any potential suspensions could significantly impact Real Madrid’s squad availability for those crucial matches.
