Manchester United endured another difficult outing in the Premier League as Brentford secured a 3-1 win at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.
The hosts struck early, with Igor Thiago scoring twice inside the opening 20 minutes. His first came in the seventh minute, finishing a Jordan Henderson through ball with a crisp strike into the top corner. He doubled Brentford’s advantage in the 19th minute, guiding a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.
United responded midway through the first half when Benjamin Šeško pulled one back from close range in the 25th minute, briefly lifting the visitors’ hopes. But Thomas Frank’s side remained compact, frustrating Erik ten Hag’s men, who struggled to find rhythm despite making several substitutions in the second half.
United were handed a lifeline in the 70th minute after Bryan Mbeumo won a penalty, but Brentford’s defensive resilience denied them a route back into the contest. The Bees sealed the result in the 94th minute when substitute Mathias Jensen finished emphatically from outside the box following a quick counterattack.
The defeat leaves United in 14th place with seven points from six games, level with Brentford but behind on goal difference. Liverpool remain top of the table with 15 points after six matches, while Crystal Palace sit second on 12 points.
Brentford’s victory lifts them to 13th, a morale-boosting result after a mixed start to the campaign. For United, however, pressure continues to mount with their inconsistency leaving them adrift of the early pacesetters.
