10-Man Netherlands stun Portugal to reach U21 Euro Semi-Finals

A dramatic late strike from substitute Ernest Poku earned a resilient ten-man Netherlands side a 1-0 victory over Portugal, sending them into the semi-finals of the European Under-21 Championship on Saturday.

Despite being a man down for over an hour, Michael Reiziger’s team produced a classic “smash and grab” performance, culminating in Poku’s decisive goal with just six minutes of normal time remaining. The Aston Villa full-back Ian Maatsen lifted a precise pass over the Portuguese defence, and AZ Alkmaar forward Poku calmly rounded goalkeeper Samuel Soares to slot home the winner.

The Netherlands’ task was made significantly more difficult in the 21st minute when Ruben van Bommel, son of former Dutch international Mark van Bommel, was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession.

Portugal were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead from the resulting situation when Netherlands captain Devyne Rensch brought down Tiago Tomas in the penalty area. However, 18-year-old winger Geovany Quenda, who is set to join Chelsea next year, saw his spot-kick rattle the woodwork.

Despite dominating possession, particularly in the second half where the Dutch were limited to just 19% of the ball, Portugal were unable to break down their opponents. The Netherlands still posed a threat, with Chico Lamba turning the ball into his own net under pressure, only for it to be ruled out for an offside flag against Maatsen.

The two-time champions will now face holders England in the semi-final in Bratislava on Wednesday, following England’s 3-1 victory over Spain in their quarter-final match.
