The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has announced the passing of legendary coach Cesar Luis Menotti at the age of 85.
Menotti will be forever remembered as the architect of Argentina’s 1978 World Cup triumph on home soil, a thrilling 3-1 victory over the Netherlands in extra time, fueled by Mario Kempes’ brace.
Menotti’s football career began as a striker, notably playing alongside Pele at Santos and representing Argentina internationally.
His coaching legacy spanned 37 years, including a successful stint at Barcelona, and positions in Italy, Mexico, Uruguay, and Argentina.
His tenure with the Argentine national team began in 1974. While his decision to exclude a young Diego Maradona from the 1978 World Cup squad was met with controversy, his strategic brilliance was undeniable.
The following year, with Maradona in the squad, Menotti led Argentina to victory in the Under-20 World Cup, defeating the Soviet Union 3-1.
Menotti’s tenure as Argentina’s coach ended after the 1982 World Cup, where a 3-1 loss to Brazil in the second round marked his departure.
