RB Leipzig end Bayer Leverkusen’s 35-Game Bundesliga Unbeaten Streak

Bayer Leverkusen’s impressive 35-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga came to an end as RB Leipzig mounted a thrilling comeback to win 3-2. The reigning champions were up 2-0, but Leipzig recovered to secure all three points with a late winner from Lois Openda.

Leverkusen initially took control of the match with Jeremie Frimpong scoring the opener after outpacing El Chadaille Bitshiabu and beating goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi at the near post. Six minutes later, Alex Grimaldo doubled their lead, finishing off a pass from Florian Wirtz from close range.

However, RB Leipzig responded just before halftime. Kevin Kampl scored with a header from Benjamin Henrichs’ cross to reduce the deficit. In the second half, Openda scored twice, including a decisive late goal, to complete the turnaround and hand Leverkusen their first league defeat in 462 days.

Leverkusen had been unbeaten throughout the entire 2023-24 Bundesliga season, winning 28 games and drawing six to become the first team in league history to go a full season without a loss. They began the 2024-25 season with a 3-2 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach, thanks to a dramatic 101st-minute winner.

During their 35-game unbeaten run, Leverkusen scored 92 goals and conceded just 26, amassing 93 points. In their match against Leipzig, they dominated possession with 63% and had 26 attempts on goal, with 10 on target, compared to Leipzig’s 8 attempts with 4 on target.

RB Leipzig is now unbeaten in 13 Bundesliga matches and becomes the first team to defeat Leverkusen since VfL Bochum’s 3-0 win on matchday 34 of the 2022-23 season.

This defeat marks the end of a remarkable run for Xabi Alonso’s men and sets the stage for a highly competitive Bundesliga season ahead.
