Manchester United’s dismal run continued with a 2-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day, their fourth loss in five Premier League matches. Captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off in the second half, compounding a miserable afternoon for Ruben Amorim’s side.
The game was a scrappy affair, but Wolves were the more clinical side, with Matheus Cunha proving to be the difference-maker. Cunha scored a bizarre opener direct from a corner, catching United goalkeeper André Onana off guard. He then provided the assist for Hwang Hee-chan to seal the victory with virtually the last kick of the game.
Fernandes’ red card, just two minutes after the interval, proved to be a turning point. Already on a yellow card, the Portuguese midfielder needlessly fouled Nélson Semedo, leaving his side with an uphill battle.
Wolves capitalized on their numerical advantage, controlling the game and creating several chances. United, meanwhile, struggled to create any meaningful opportunities, with striker Rasmus Hojlund failing to register a single touch inside the Wolves penalty area before being substituted.
The victory lifts Wolves out of the relegation zone and provides a welcome boost for new manager Vitor Pereira. For Manchester United, the defeat further highlights the scale of the task facing Amorim, who has now overseen four Premier League defeats in just seven games – the fastest any United manager has reached that unwanted milestone.
The focus will now turn to how Amorim addresses his team’s shortcomings and whether Fernandes will face further disciplinary action for his red card. With United languishing in the bottom half of the table, the pressure is mounting on the manager and his players to turn their fortunes around.
