Late Goals Send Barcelona Past Guadalajara in Copa del Rey

Barcelona secured a 2–0 victory over third-division side CD Guadalajara in the Copa del Rey Round of 32, overcoming stubborn resistance at the Estadio Pedro Escartín to book their place in the next round.

The visitors dominated the match from the outset, controlling 83% of possession and creating numerous chances, but struggled to break down a disciplined Guadalajara defense for much of the contest. Despite registering 21 shots and an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.94, Barcelona were kept at bay until the final quarter-hour.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 76th minute when Andreas Christensen rose highest to head home from a set piece, rewarding Barcelona’s sustained pressure. Guadalajara, who managed just 17% possession and generated 0.19 xG from six shots, were unable to respond or create a clear opportunity.

As the hosts pushed forward in the closing moments, Barcelona struck again on the counter-attack. Marcus Rashford sealed the result in the 90th minute with a composed finish, ensuring there would be no late upset.

Barcelona made extensive changes to their starting lineup, resting several key players including Robert Lewandowski, Dani Olmo, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo, but the rotated side maintained control throughout. Standout performances came from Christensen, who earned high praise for both his defensive work and decisive goal, and Frenkie de Jong, who dictated play from midfield.

Guadalajara, unbeaten in their previous five matches, can take pride in a resilient display that frustrated one of Europe’s elite sides, even if their cup run ultimately came to an end.
