Newcastle on the brink of Champions League after thrashing Brighton

Newcastle United moved to within touching distance of Champions League qualification with a 4-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Thursday.

Callum Wilson scored twice and set up another goal as the Magpies put on a dominant display at St. James’ Park.

Kieran Trippier was also in fine form, providing two assists with his trademark dead-ball deliveries.

Newcastle took the lead in the 22nd minute when Wilson headed home Trippier’s corner.

The Magpies doubled their advantage just before half-time when Undav turned the ball into his own net from Trippier’s cross.

Undav pulled a goal back for Brighton early in the second half, but Wilson restored Newcastle’s two-goal cushion in the 89th minute.

The England international then set up Bruno Guimaraes to complete the scoring in stoppage time.

The win leaves Newcastle third in the Premier League table, two points ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal.

The Magpies need just one win from their remaining two games to secure a place in the Champions League next season.

Brighton remain sixth, but they are still in contention for Europa League football.
