Nigeria beat Holders South Africa to Reach WAFCON Final

A dramatic stoppage-time goal from Michelle Alozie secured Nigeria’s place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a tense 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa on Tuesday.

The Super Falcons will now face tournament hosts Morocco in the final on Saturday, as they seek a record-extending 10th continental title.

In a hard-fought semi-final at the Stade Larbi Zaouli, Nigeria took the lead shortly before halftime. A handball in the penalty area by Bomgeka Gamede resulted in a spot-kick, which captain Rasheedat Ajibade coolly converted.

South Africa, who grew into the game and controlled possession for long periods, found their equaliser on the hour mark, also from the penalty spot. Veteran Nigerian defender Osinachi Ohale was adjudged to have fouled Hildah Magaia, and Linda Motlhalo made no mistake from 12 yards to level the score.

With the match seemingly destined for extra time, a long ball into the South African penalty area from Michelle Alozie in the 93rd minute evaded everyone, including goalkeeper Andile Dlamini, and slipped into the back of the net. The goal, Alozie’s first for the senior national team, sparked wild celebrations and sent Nigeria into their 10th WAFCON final.

In the other semi-final, hosts Morocco edged out Ghana 4-2 in a penalty shootout after their match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Nigeria have a perfect record in WAFCON finals, having won on all nine of their previous appearances. They will look to maintain that record against the host nation on Saturday, July 26.
