England’s route through the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage has been anything but convincing, but Thomas Tuchel’s side, who are already qualified for round of 32, heading into Saturday’s final Group L fixture against Panama.
A win at New York New Jersey Stadium should be enough to send the Three Lions into the knockout rounds as group winners, provided Ghana do not overturn the goal difference with a big victory over Croatia. Panama, meanwhile, have already been eliminated after narrow defeats to Ghana and Croatia, leaving them with one final chance to leave the tournament on a positive note.
Match Preview
England’s campaign has produced mixed emotions.
The thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia suggested Tuchel’s side were beginning to click, but the optimism quickly faded after a frustrating goalless draw against Ghana. England dominated possession, controlled territory and spent long periods camped inside the Ghanaian half, yet rarely looked capable of finding the breakthrough.
In fact, the Three Lions finished the match with nearly 79 percent possession without scoring—the highest figure ever recorded by a team in a World Cup match. There was even an element of fortune involved, with Ghana denied what many believed was a clear second-half penalty after a challenge from Ezri Konsa escaped VAR intervention.
Despite the criticism, England remain in a strong position. Avoiding defeat would almost certainly secure qualification, but finishing first in the group carries obvious benefits. Winning the group would likely spare Tuchel’s men an early showdown with Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo, instead handing them a theoretically kinder Round of 32 opponent.
Panama’s World Cup journey is already over, but Thomas Christiansen’s side have not disgraced themselves.
Both defeats have been competitive. Ghana needed a moment of quality to edge past the Central Americans before Croatia relied on a late Ante Budimir goal to claim all three points. Panama have remained organised defensively but have struggled badly in attack, failing to score in either group match.
That lack of cutting edge has ultimately cost them. Adalberto Carrasquilla’s absence through injury has robbed Panama of creativity in midfield, while veteran captain Aníbal Godoy has barely featured due to fitness concerns.
The two nations last met at the 2018 World Cup, when England ran out emphatic 6-1 winners. A repeat of that scoreline feels unlikely given Panama’s disciplined defensive approach, but Tuchel’s side will still expect to create enough chances to finish the group stage on a winning note.
Team News
England have been dealt a defensive setback after Reece James suffered a hamstring injury against Ghana and is expected to miss the next couple of matches. Djed Spence is in line to switch across, while Nico O’Reilly could return at left-back.
Declan Rice continues to be carefully managed after playing through a minor knock during the tournament. If Tuchel decides against risking the Arsenal midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo is ready to step into midfield alongside Elliot Anderson.
Questions also remain over Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford, although both are expected to be available. Harry Kane will once again lead the attack after scoring twice in England’s opening victory over Croatia.
Panama remain without influential midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla, who suffered a setback in his recovery from an adductor injury. Christiansen is likely to stick with a compact 5-4-1 formation, hoping to frustrate England for as long as possible.
Form Guide
Panama: L-L-D-W-L-W
Panama have competed well defensively but continue searching for their first-ever World Cup point. Goals have been difficult to come by, with back-to-back scoreless defeats ending any hopes of qualification.
England: D-W-W-W-L-D
The Three Lions remain unbeaten in the tournament and have shown flashes of their attacking quality. However, consistency in the final third remains Tuchel’s biggest concern after the frustrating stalemate with Ghana.
Predicted Lineups
Panama: Mosquera; Murillo, Córdoba, Ramos, Andrade, Blackman; Martínez, Bárcenas, Harvey, Rodríguez; Fajardo.
England: Pickford; Spence, Guéhi, Konsa, O’Reilly; Mainoo, Anderson; Madueke, Bellingham, Rashford; Kane.
Prediction
Panama have shown enough defensive resilience to suggest England will need patience once again. Christiansen’s side are likely to sit deep, deny space between the lines and hope to frustrate one of the tournament favourites.
But unlike against Ghana, England should eventually find the breakthrough. The movement of Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, combined with the pace of Rashford, ought to stretch Panama’s back line over the course of ninety minutes.
It may not be another attacking masterclass, but it should be enough for England to secure top spot and head into the knockout rounds with momentum.
