PSG Held by PSV Despite Dominant Display as Late Penalty Overturned

Paris St-Germain were left frustrated after a 1-1 draw with PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, despite dominating the match and creating a multitude of scoring opportunities.

The home side, still searching for a consistent goal threat since Kylian Mbappé’s departure, were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal.

Winger Ousmane Dembélé was particularly culpable, missing two excellent chances in the first half, including one from close range that he blazed over the bar. Bradley Barcola also went close for PSG, but it was PSV who took a surprise lead against the run of play.

Noa Lang capitalized on a loose pass in midfield by Joao Neves, driving forward and unleashing a powerful shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma at the near post.
PSG’s pressure eventually paid off in the second half when Achraf Hakimi’s swerving long-range effort slipped through the grasp of PSV goalkeeper Walter Benítez.

The home side continued to push for a winner, with Hakimi going close again and racking up 26 shots in total. However, PSV held firm, and even threatened a late winner themselves when Mauro Júnior curled an effort wide.

In a dramatic finale, referee Glenn Nyberg initially awarded PSG a penalty for a challenge by Olivier Boscagli on Marco Asensio. However, after consulting VAR, Nyberg overturned his decision, judging that Boscagli had won the ball.

The draw leaves PSG with just four points from their opening three Champions League games, and raises further questions about their attacking capabilities in the absence of Mbappé.
