Sadio Mane of Senegal will miss the World Cup after undergoing surgery on a knee injury sustained while playing for Bayern Munich.
Senegal’s football federation announced on Tuesday that Mane, 30, would miss their “first games” at the tournament.
However, an additional MRI scan on Thursday revealed that surgical intervention was required.
On November 8, Mane was forced off during Bayern’s Bundesliga victory over Werder Bremen.

Senegal kicks off their World Cup campaign on Monday against the Netherlands.
The West Africans are in Group A, with games against Qatar (November 25) and Ecuador (November 29) to come.
