Lionel Scaloni was left speechless after Argentina came from behind to beat England 2-1 and reach a second successive World Cup final. The defending champions struck twice in the closing stages in Atlanta to set up a meeting with Spain on Sunday.
England had led through Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute strike, closing in on a first final since 1966. Argentina turned the tie on its head late on, Lionel Messi teeing up Enzo Fernandez’s long-range effort in the 85th minute before crossing for Lautaro Martinez to head a 92nd-minute winner.
Scaloni struggled to process the victory. “Well, I’m lost for words. A great happiness for our country and our people,” he said. “And another great happiness for this group who just do not know when they are beaten.”
He spoke of the difficulty of what his players had achieved. “I can tell them that we are going to try to win, we’re going to leave it all out there, but the truth is that to do this is very difficult,” he added. “It’s very difficult for people to understand what our players have given. It is so impressive.”
The manager returned to a familiar theme in describing his squad. “We are unique. It’s not arrogance, it is all heart,” Scaloni said. “Today so many people arrived here to support us and for that I am truly grateful. They helped us to victory.”
He finished with a tribute to what wearing the shirt demands. “This shirt merits us giving absolutely everything possible until the very end,” he said. “To not spare anything at all.”
The comeback followed a similar pattern to Argentina’s wins over Egypt and Switzerland, both of which required late goals. They will now face Spain in New Jersey on Sunday, chasing back-to-back world titles.
