Slot Confirms Leoni Deal, Keeps Quiet on Guehi Chase

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that the club have agreed a deal for Italian defender Giovanni Leoni. The move is not yet official as the 18-year-old has not signed his contract.

Leoni will join from Parma for around £26 million. He made 17 Serie A appearances last season, helping Parma avoid relegation.

Slot said: “The clubs have agreed a deal but he hasn’t signed yet. Once that happens, I can speak in more detail.”

A Rising Star in Defence

Leoni began his career at Padova before moving to Sampdoria and then Parma. At 6ft 5in, he is strong in the air and calm on the ball.

Last season, he ranked among the best in Serie A for aerial duels won. He has also said he looks up to Virgil van Dijk and Chris Smalling. AC Milan and Inter were interested, but Liverpool’s higher offer convinced Parma to sell.

No Comment on Guehi

When asked about Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, Slot declined to respond. Palace value Guehi at £40 million, but Liverpool want to pay less. Guehi has one year left on his contract and wants regular playing time before the World Cup.

Big Summer Spending

Liverpool have already spent close to £270 million this summer. They have earned about £170 million from player sales. The club also had a £110 million bid for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak rejected.

If deals for Leoni, Guehi, and Isak go through, spending could pass £400 million.

Season Opener on Friday

Liverpool face Bournemouth at Anfield in their Premier League opener on Friday. Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté are currently the only fit senior centre-backs.
