South Korea have officially secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will head to North America carrying renewed expectations of making a deep run in the tournament. With an experienced core, rising European-based talent, and one of Asia’s most balanced squads, the Taeguk Warriors are widely viewed as one of the continent’s strongest representatives for the global showpiece.
After suffering group-stage eliminations at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, South Korea responded positively in Qatar 2022 by reaching the Round of 16 before eventually falling to Brazil in the knockout stage. The team now hopes to build on that progress and potentially recreate the magic of the unforgettable 2002 World Cup campaign, when they stunned the football world by reaching the semi-finals on home soil.
At the heart of the squad is veteran captain Son Heung-min, who remains the face of South Korean football. The former Tottenham Hotspur F.C. star, now playing for Los Angeles FC, is expected to feature in his fourth World Cup tournament and will once again carry much of the nation’s attacking hopes. Known for his pace, movement, and finishing ability, Son continues to be one of Asia’s most influential footballers on the international stage.
South Korea also possess quality throughout the spine of the team. In defence, Kim Min-jae will play a leading role after establishing himself among Europe’s elite centre-backs with FC Bayern Munich. His physical presence, composure on the ball, and leadership qualities are expected to be crucial as South Korea prepare to face some of the world’s strongest attacking sides.
Alongside Kim, defenders such as Cho Yu-min, Seol Young-woo, and Lee Tae-seok provide depth and versatility across the backline. Veteran goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu is expected to remain first choice between the posts, while Jo Hyeon-woo offers reliable support and international experience.
In midfield, coach Hong Myung-bo has several technically gifted players capable of controlling matches against top opposition. Hwang In-beom has emerged as a key figure after impressive performances for Feyenoord, while Lee Kang-in continues to develop into one of the country’s most creative attacking talents at Paris Saint-Germain F.C..
The squad also includes several players currently competing in Europe and the United Kingdom, including Hwang Hee-chan, Bae Jun-ho, Paik Seung-ho, and Yang Hyun-jun. Their energy and technical quality provide South Korea with multiple tactical options heading into the tournament.
Up front, South Korea are expected to rely on the goalscoring abilities of Oh Hyeon-gyu and Cho Gue-sung, both of whom bring physicality and finishing ability to the attack. Combined with Son’s leadership and Lee Kang-in’s creativity, the Taeguk Warriors appear well-equipped to trouble elite defences.
South Korea are projected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 system, featuring Kim Seung-gyu in goal, a defence led by Kim Min-jae and Cho Yu-min, Hwang In-beom and Paik Seung-ho in midfield, and an attacking trio of Son Heung-min, Lee Kang-in, and Lee Jae-sung supporting striker Oh Hyeon-gyu.
With a balanced blend of experience and emerging talent, South Korea will travel to the United States, Mexico, and Canada aiming not only to advance beyond the group stage, but also to prove they can compete with the very best on football’s grandest stage.
