Sunderland win race for Malick Fofana after late Crystal Palace twist

Sunderland have completed a deal to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon after a dramatic deadline-day battle with Crystal Palace. The Belgian winger had initially agreed terms with Sunderland, with the deal worth up to around €35 million, including add-ons.

Crystal Palace made a late attempt to hijack the transfer after agreeing terms of their own, but Sunderland ultimately secured Fofana’s signature. The 21-year-old, who joined Lyon from Gent in 2024, will now move to the Stadium of Light as Sunderland strengthen their squad for the Premier League and Europa League campaign.
