Arsenal vs Coventry City: Preview, Prediction, Team News, Lineups

Arsenal will begin the defence of their Premier League title on Friday evening when they welcome newly promoted Coventry City to the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s side enter the new campaign as champions and strong favourites to retain the trophy, while Frank Lampard’s Coventry are preparing for their first Premier League season since 2000-01 after winning the Championship last term.

Match preview

Arsenal have already made an early statement ahead of the new season, producing an impressive 3-0 victory over Manchester City in last Sunday’s Community Shield. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard secured the trophy and gave the Gunners an ideal competitive warm-up for their title defence.

Arteta’s side ended last season seven points clear of Manchester City after collecting 85 points and will now attempt to become the first Arsenal side since the 1930s to win consecutive league titles. They have also strengthened during the summer with the arrivals of Bruno Guimaraes, Piero Hincapie, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier.

Coventry, meanwhile, return to the top flight after an excellent Championship campaign in which they collected 95 points and finished 11 points clear of Ipswich Town. The Sky Blues have been active in the transfer market, bringing in eight new players as Lampard prepares his squad for the step up in quality.

The visitors finished their pre-season preparations with a 2-0 victory over Monaco on August 14, with Ellis Simms and Loum Tchaouna on the scoresheet. That followed a draw and another victory in their previous two friendlies, giving Lampard’s side a positive finish to their preparations.

There is a significant historical advantage in Arsenal’s favour, with the Gunners winning 43 of the 76 previous meetings between the clubs. Coventry have won 14, while 19 matches have ended level.

Team News

Arsenal remain without William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, who are both ruled out with injuries. Saliba is recovering from a back problem, while Timber is dealing with a groin issue.

Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice both came off the bench in the Community Shield after their limited involvement in pre-season following England’s World Cup campaign. Saka is expected to return to the starting XI, but Rice could again be managed carefully and begin on the bench. Bruno Guimaraes is being assessed after his Community Shield involvement, although he remains in contention for his Premier League debut.

Coventry will be without Haji Wright, who is sidelined with a thigh injury, while Luke Woolfenden is also unavailable. Jack Rudoni and Frank Onyeka are doubts and face late fitness checks.

A number of Coventry’s summer recruits could make their Premier League debuts, including goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, defender Aurele Amenda, midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi and winger Loum Tchaouna. Taiwo Awoniyi is expected to begin on the bench, with Simms likely to lead the attack.

Predicted Lineups

What we say: Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City

Coventry have strengthened intelligently and should have enough quality to compete for Premier League survival, but this is an exceptionally difficult opening assignment.

Arsenal’s victory over Manchester City showed that Arteta’s side are already operating at a high level, while the return of Saka to the starting XI should give them another significant attacking threat.

The visitors may frustrate Arsenal for periods, particularly if they maintain the organisation that served them so well in the Championship. However, the champions have too much quality across the pitch and should eventually find a way through.

Our prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City.
