Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur – Preview, Prediction, Team News, Lineups

Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur will begin their 2026-27 Premier League campaigns with a London derby at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday evening.

Keith Andrews’ Brentford finished ninth last season and narrowly missed out on European football, while Tottenham endured another difficult campaign, finishing 17th for the second successive year. Roberto De Zerbi will now attempt to oversee a significant improvement after a major summer rebuild.

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur – Match preview

Brentford finished ninth last season, missing out on a place in the Conference League on goal difference despite a strong campaign under Andrews. The Bees struggled for consistency towards the end of the league season, winning just once in their final 10 matches, but they have made an emphatic start to their preparations for the new campaign.

Andrews’ side won four consecutive friendlies to close pre-season, scoring 17 goals in the process. Their final outing produced a remarkable 7-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, with Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade both scoring twice. Record signing Mamadou Sangare also found the net and is expected to make his competitive debut against Spurs.

Tottenham have undergone a far more extensive transformation. De Zerbi’s side finished 17th last season but have invested heavily during the summer, bringing in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes in club-record deals alongside defenders Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Andrew Robertson.

The signs during pre-season have been encouraging. Spurs remained unbeaten across seven matches, including a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the Sydney Super Cup and a 3-0 win over Hoffenheim in their final public friendly. Mikey Moore scored twice in that victory, while Richarlison also found the net.

Brentford have yet to beat Tottenham at home in the Premier League since returning to the top flight in 2021. Four of the five previous meetings between the sides at the Gtech Community Stadium have ended in draws, with Spurs winning the other. Their most recent meeting at the ground finished 0-0 on New Year’s Day.

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur – Team News

Brentford have two confirmed absentees for their opener. Sepp van den Berg is sidelined with an abductor problem, while Antoni Milambo remains out with a knee injury. There are no other major fitness concerns, leaving Andrews with a largely settled squad to choose from.

Sangare is expected to make his Premier League debut after his £41m move from Lens, joining Vitaly Janelt and Mathias Jensen in midfield. Thiago should lead the attack after an outstanding pre-season, while Dango Ouattara and Schade are expected to provide the width.

Tottenham have a considerably longer injury list. Micky van de Ven has been ruled out after missing the entirety of pre-season, while Pedro Porro and Pape Sarr are also unavailable. Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Dejan Kulusevski and Mohammed Kudus remain sidelined.

There is better news elsewhere, with Dominic Solanke, James Maddison and Mateus Fernandes having returned to training. However, De Zerbi is expected to avoid taking unnecessary risks with players who have had limited preparation. New signings Senesi and Van Hecke are therefore set to form a new central-defensive partnership, while Archie Gray is likely to continue at right-back.

Predicted Lineups

Brentford: Caoimhin Kelleher; Michael Kayode, Kristoffer Ajer, Nathan Collins, Keane Lewis-Potter; Mamadou Sangare, Vitaly Janelt; Dango Ouattara, Mathias Jensen, Kevin Schade; Igor Thiago.

Tottenham Hotspur: Antonin Kinsky; Archie Gray, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson; Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes; Mikey Moore, Conor Gallagher, Mathys Tel; Richarlison.

What we say: Brentford 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur

This should be one of the more difficult opening-day fixtures to call. Brentford have home advantage, greater continuity and considerable attacking confidence after their pre-season goal rush, while Tottenham possess significantly more individual quality following their summer spending.

The visitors’ defensive absences could be particularly significant. Van de Ven’s absence means a new central-defensive partnership will be tested immediately, while Porro’s unavailability removes another established option from De Zerbi’s back line.

Tottenham should nevertheless have enough attacking quality to score, particularly with Richarlison, Tel and Moore offering pace and movement in the final third. Brentford’s recent scoring form makes it difficult to envisage the hosts being held at bay for 90 minutes, but Spurs’ revamped midfield should also create opportunities.

Our prediction: Brentford 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur.
