Aston Villa have stepped up their search for a new goalkeeper by opening negotiations to sign Parma’s Zion Suzuki after the Japan international’s proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain collapsed.
TalkSPORT report that Villa are in advanced discussions over a deal for the 23-year-old following the breakdown of his switch to the French champions. The transfer is understood to have stalled after issues emerged late in the process, leaving the Premier League club in a position to move for one of Europe’s most highly rated young goalkeepers.
Villa’s interest has also intensified speculation surrounding the future of Emiliano Martinez. Juventus have admired the Argentina international throughout the summer and fresh reports in Italy suggest the Serie A side believe Villa’s pursuit of Suzuki could improve their chances of landing the 33-year-old.
Martinez remains under contract at Villa until 2029, and the club have previously insisted they were not actively looking to sell their first-choice goalkeeper. However, Suzuki has long been viewed as a potential successor, with Villa monitoring his progress since his impressive first season in Serie A.
The Japanese international joined Parma in 2024 and enhanced his reputation with a series of strong displays before attracting interest from several leading European clubs. Paris Saint-Germain appeared set to secure his signature, but the deal broke down at the final stage, reopening the race for his services.
Juventus continue to explore several goalkeeping options, including Suzuki and Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario, but Martinez remains a player they admire if a deal becomes financially achievable. Whether Villa’s pursuit of Suzuki ultimately leads to movement on Martinez is expected to become clearer before the transfer window closes.
