Manchester United will begin their 2026/27 Premier League campaign away from home when Michael Carrick’s side travel to face newly promoted Hull City on Saturday, August 22.
The fixture will be played at the MKM Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 12:30pm UK time.
But who exactly are Hull City, and why is this such an intriguing opening fixture for United?
Who are Hull City?
Hull City, nicknamed the Tigers, are a professional football club based in Hull, East Yorkshire.
The club has returned to the Premier League after a lengthy absence, securing promotion from the Championship through the play-offs. Their promotion brings them back to England’s top flight for the first time in almost a decade.
Hull’s most recent Premier League appearance came in the 2016/17 season, when they were eventually relegated after finishing 18th.
Now, under manager Sergej Jakirović, the Tigers are back in the big time and hoping to establish themselves in the Premier League.
How did Hull City get promoted?
Hull’s promotion came after a dramatic Championship campaign that culminated in the play-offs.
They defeated Middlesbrough in the play-off final to secure their return to the Premier League.
The club has subsequently invested heavily in its squad, bringing in a number of new players as Jakirović prepares his team for the demands of top-flight football.
Among their summer arrivals are goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, defender Nobel Mendy and striker Joe Gelhardt, as Hull look to strengthen almost every area of the squad.
A difficult first test for the Tigers
Hull could hardly have asked for a more high-profile opponent for their first Premier League game.
They will welcome Manchester United to the MKM Stadium in their opening fixture.
For United, the match represents the beginning of Michael Carrick’s first full Premier League season in charge. The Red Devils will be expected to start strongly, but Hull will see the game as an opportunity to immediately announce that they belong in the top flight.
The Premier League itself confirmed Hull’s opening fixture as a Saturday lunchtime clash, with United making the trip to Yorkshire on August 22.
Hull’s return to the Premier League
Hull have experienced plenty of ups and downs over the past decade.
They were relegated from the Premier League in 2017 and subsequently spent years moving between the Championship and League One before eventually stabilising in the second tier.
Their return to the Premier League now represents another major chapter in the club’s history.
The challenge, however, is enormous.
Hull are widely regarded as one of the sides most at risk of relegation, with the newly promoted club facing a particularly difficult opening run. After United, they play Coventry City, Chelsea and Newcastle United before facing Aston Villa.
Manchester United’s challenge
For United, this is more than simply an opening-day fixture.
Carrick begins his first full campaign knowing that expectations at Old Trafford will be high. United’s opening six fixtures have been described as statistically favourable, with another promoted side, Ipswich Town, visiting Old Trafford in their second league game.
That makes a strong start particularly important.
Hull, meanwhile, will be hoping to produce the kind of opening-day shock that newly promoted sides dream about.
Manchester United have the bigger squad, greater resources and considerably more Premier League experience. But Hull City will have something United cannot manufacture — the excitement of returning to the top flight and a home crowd desperate to make their first Premier League match in years unforgettable.
And that makes Hull City vs Manchester United a fascinating way to begin the new Premier League season.
