Anwar El Ghazi, the Dutch footballer who was dismissed by Bundesliga club Mainz 05 for his support of Palestine, has announced his intention to donate €500,000 of his settlement money to projects benefiting children in Gaza.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), El Ghazi, who is of Moroccan descent, stated that he will use a portion of his compensation to make a positive impact on the lives of children in Gaza. He also expressed his gratitude to Mainz 05 for providing the funds.

El Ghazi clarified that his legal action against Mainz was not motivated by financial gain, but rather by his desire to stand up for his beliefs. He also highlighted how Mainz 05’s attempt to silence him by terminating his contract only served to strengthen his resolve to speak out for the oppressed people of Gaza.

Previously, the Mainz Labor Court ruled that El Ghazi’s dismissal over a pro-Palestinian Instagram post was “invalid,” asserting that his statements were protected under freedom of expression and did not constitute grounds for termination.

The court ordered Mainz 05 to reinstate El Ghazi and continue paying his monthly salary of 150,000 euros.
