Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United: Carrick faces crucial Champions League test against Simeone’s side

Manchester United face a difficult Champions League test against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday as Michael Carrick looks to turn around his side’s disappointing start to the 2026–27 season.

United travel to the Estadio Metropolitano for their second league-phase fixture, with the pressure building after a series of inconsistent domestic performances. Atletico, meanwhile, have started the campaign strongly and will be looking to make home advantage count.

The match presents contrasting challenges for the two sides. Atletico are challenging near the top of La Liga, while United sit 12th in the Premier League with just one win from their opening six matches.

Atletico arrive in strong form

Diego Simeone’s Atletico have made an encouraging start to the new season, winning six, drawing one and losing one of their eight La Liga matches. Their campaign has included an impressive 2-1 derby victory over Real Madrid.

Attacking players Alex Baena and Jonathan David have been important to Atletico’s early progress. Baena has registered four goals and two assists, while David has contributed three goals and two assists.

However, Atletico will be eager to respond after losing 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield in their opening Champions League fixture. Simeone knows his side must be prepared for a demanding contest against a United team capable of producing dangerous attacking moments.

“The game will be long, it will be tough and we have to manage our efforts to compete well,” Simeone said.

Atletico’s strong domestic form gives them reason for confidence, but their European defeat means they cannot afford another setback if they want to make an early impression in the competition.

Carrick under pressure as United seek a response

Manchester United travel to Spain amid growing scrutiny over their early-season performances. They have collected just six points from six Premier League matches, with one win, three draws and two defeats.

Their recent 1-0 loss to Manchester City has added to the pressure, leaving Carrick searching for a response from his players.

United did, however, begin their Champions League campaign positively, thrashing Azerbaijani side Sabah 4-0. That result placed them in a strong position after the opening round, and they will hope to carry some of that attacking confidence into Tuesday’s fixture.

Carrick has urged his squad to remain positive despite their domestic difficulties.

“We’ve got to stay positive and keep doing the right things. We need to do better and we need more points, of course we do,” he said.

The United manager also described the trip to Madrid as an opportunity to reset.

“We’ve got big games coming up and are looking forward to Tuesday now. A fresh start, a fresh game and we will go there looking forward to the game,” Carrick added.

Bruno Fernandes and Mbeumo key to United’s hopes

Bruno Fernandes remains one of United’s most important attacking players. The captain has scored four goals in all competitions this season and also contributed an assist, making him the club’s leading scorer so far.

Bryan Mbeumo has also offered an attacking threat, recording three goals and an assist. United will need both players to make an impact if they are to trouble Atletico’s defence.

Atletico, meanwhile, will look to Baena and David to exploit opportunities in the final third. Julian Alvarez will also be under scrutiny as he seeks to find his scoring touch, although Simeone has defended the striker’s wider contribution to the team.

The contrasting attacking threats could make the midfield battle particularly important, with United needing to balance their forward ambitions against Atletico’s ability to control the tempo.

Team news: United dealing with injuries

Atletico are expected to have a fully fit squad available for the match, giving Simeone several options as he prepares his starting line-up.

United face a more complicated selection picture, with as many as five players reported unavailable through injury: Patrick Dorgu, Benjamin Sesko, Tom Heaton, Manuel Ugarte and Matthijs de Ligt.

Those absences could limit Carrick’s options, particularly as United attempt to find greater consistency across the pitch.

Head-to-head: Atletico hold the advantage

The clubs have met four times in European competition, with Atletico winning twice and the other two matches ending in draws. Manchester United have yet to beat the Spanish side.

Their most recent meetings came in the 2021–22 Champions League round of 16. The first leg finished 1-1 in Madrid before Atletico won 1-0 at Old Trafford to progress.

United have generally performed better against Spanish opposition in recent seasons, but their record against Atletico underlines the challenge awaiting them at the Metropolitano.

Prediction: Atletico Madrid favoured to win

Atletico’s stronger domestic form and home advantage make them favourites, although United’s opening Champions League victory suggests they should not be underestimated.

Opta’s supercomputer gives Atletico a 48.5% chance of winning, compared with 27.2% for Manchester United, while a draw is assigned a 24.3% probability.

For Carrick, a positive result would provide a valuable boost amid growing pressure. For Simeone, the priority will be to translate Atletico’s strong league form into a second Champions League performance that puts them back on track.

With both sides looking to build momentum in Europe, Tuesday’s encounter could prove significant for their early league-phase campaigns.
