The Beautiful Game, Beautifully Told

Barcelona Identify Cesc Fabregas as Potential Successor to Hansi Flick in 2028

Barcelona have reportedly identified former club midfielder Cesc Fabregas as a leading candidate to replace Hansi Flick when the German manager eventually leaves Camp Nou.

According to SPORT, the Catalan giants are closely monitoring Fabregas’s progress at Como as they begin planning for the club’s next managerial era.

Flick recently extended his contract with Barcelona, but reports suggest he has no intention of continuing beyond its expiry in 2028. The German has also indicated that Barcelona could be his final managerial job before retirement, prompting the club to consider potential long-term successors.

Fabregas Emerges as Barcelona’s Preferred Candidate

Fabregas is believed to be an attractive option because of his deep connections with Barcelona. The former Spain international came through the club’s youth system before returning to Camp Nou as a first-team player, giving him a strong understanding of the club’s footballing philosophy.

Barcelona are also impressed by his work as Como manager, where he has earned recognition for developing young players and transforming the Italian side into an increasingly competitive team.

His familiarity with Barcelona’s identity, combined with his growing managerial reputation, has reportedly placed him firmly on the club’s radar.

Como Success Strengthens Fabregas’s Reputation

Fabregas’s progress in Italy has attracted considerable attention. According to the report, he guided Como to a Champions League qualification spot last season, marking a significant achievement for the club.

Como have also made an encouraging start to the current campaign, winning two of their opening three matches. The report further highlights victories over RB Leipzig and Manchester United, with Feyenoord accounting for their only defeat.

His ability to improve players and establish a competitive team has reportedly strengthened Barcelona’s belief that he could eventually succeed Flick.

No Immediate Move Expected

Despite Barcelona’s reported interest, Fabregas appears content at Como and has given no indication that he is preparing to leave.

That situation suits both clubs for now. Barcelona remain settled under Flick, while Fabregas can continue developing his managerial career in Italy without the immediate pressure of taking charge of his former club.

Any potential appointment is therefore likely to depend on what happens when Flick’s current contract approaches its end in 2028.

For Barcelona, Fabregas could represent a long-term option who combines a connection to the club’s traditions with the experience of building a competitive team. However, the report points to a potential future succession plan rather than an imminent managerial change.
