Harry Kane: A Star That Outshone Years of Doubt
Harry Kane’s journey to the top of world football has been far from straightforward, but the England captain has finally reached the pinnacle of the sport after winning the Ballon d’Or.
The 33-year-old received the prestigious individual award at a ceremony at London’s Palladium on Monday, capping a remarkable career defined by persistence, professionalism and extraordinary goalscoring achievements.
Kane’s success represents recognition for years of hard work, including periods when his future at the highest level appeared uncertain. His achievements for England, Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich have established him as one of the most accomplished forwards of his generation.
During the 2025–26 season, Kane scored an extraordinary 73 goals in 65 appearances for Bayern and England. He also finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal in the Ballon d’Or race.
From loan spells to football’s biggest individual prize
Kane’s rise was not immediate. Before becoming a leading striker in English and European football, he spent time on loan at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City while attempting to establish himself.
He joined Leyton Orient in January 2011, aged 17, making 18 appearances and scoring five goals. A year later, he moved to Millwall, where he scored nine goals in 24 starts despite concerns that the club’s intense atmosphere might prove difficult for a young player.
Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood believed the experience helped Kane develop. While some staff reportedly worried about the environment at Millwall, Sherwood considered it an ideal setting for the young striker to grow.
Kane subsequently made his Tottenham debut in August 2012 before joining Norwich City on loan. That spell proved challenging, as he failed to score in three starts and suffered a serious foot injury.
Former Norwich manager Chris Hughton nevertheless recognised Kane’s determination and finishing ability. He recalled how the striker regularly stayed behind after training to practise with both feet.
Leicester setback tested Kane’s belief
Kane’s next loan move took him to Leicester City in February 2013. He made five starts and scored twice, but his time at the club is also remembered for the dramatic Championship play-off semi-final against Watford.
Kane was left on the bench for much of that match and came on after 61 minutes. Leicester ultimately lost after Anthony Knockaert’s penalty was saved by Manuel Almunia before Troy Deeney scored a dramatic late winner for Watford.
Jamie Vardy, who would later become Kane’s England team-mate, was also among Leicester’s substitutes that day.
Looking back on that period, Kane admitted that he questioned whether he was good enough to return to Tottenham and succeed at the highest level. His struggles in the Championship represented one of the most difficult stages of his early career.
However, those doubts did not define his future. Kane returned to Tottenham and gradually developed into a prolific goalscorer, becoming the club’s record scorer with 280 goals in 435 appearances.
Bayern Munich move transformed his legacy
Despite his remarkable achievements at Tottenham, Kane frequently faced criticism over his lack of major trophies. His individual consistency was sometimes overshadowed by the club’s inability to secure silverware during his time in north London.
His move to Bayern Munich in August 2023 changed that narrative. According to the BBC report, Kane has since won the Bundesliga twice, strengthening his reputation as a player capable of delivering both individual excellence and team success.
His performances have also expanded his role beyond that of a traditional centre-forward. Kane can drop into midfield, create opportunities for team-mates and deliver incisive passes, making him an important contributor to Bayern’s overall attacking play.
The Ballon d’Or victory further confirms his standing among the world’s elite footballers.
England record adds to his remarkable career
Kane’s international achievements are equally impressive. He is England’s all-time leading goalscorer with 91 goals and has earned 125 caps, equalling Peter Shilton’s appearance record, according to the report.
Yet international silverware remains a major ambition. Kane has experienced defeat in two European Championship finals and two World Cup semi-finals, leaving success with England as one of the few significant honours still missing from his career.
With Euro 2028 scheduled to take place in the United Kingdom and Ireland, another opportunity could await the England captain if he maintains his fitness and form.
Former England midfielder Danny Murphy praised Kane’s technical ability, professionalism and longevity, describing him as a credit to himself and his family.
Alan Shearer also highlighted the striker’s determination, arguing that Kane’s journey demonstrates what sustained effort can achieve when a player faces rejection or is told he is not good enough.
Humility behind the superstar status
Kane’s response to winning the Ballon d’Or reflected the attitude that has accompanied him throughout his career. His message on social media — “Work hard in silence. Let success be your noise” — captured the significance of the achievement.
He has often been described as an understated figure in an era when footballers attract considerable attention beyond the pitch. His reputation for professionalism and humility has earned admiration from former players and observers across the game.
For Kane, however, the award is unlikely to mark the end of his ambitions. Bayern are scheduled to face Magdeburg in the German Cup before taking on Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, giving the striker immediate opportunities to continue his remarkable form.
After years of loan spells, injuries and uncertainty, Kane has reached the highest individual level in football. His story is a reminder that a difficult beginning does not have to determine the limits of a player’s career.
