Barcelona Run Riot at Home with 6–1 Win over Olympiacos
Barcelona ran riot at home, scoring half a dozen goals against Olympiacos. Fermin López bagged a stunning hat-trick, Marcus Rashford added a brace, and Lamine Yamal converted a penalty to seal a dominant 6–1 victory for the Catalans.
The match had everything — two penalties, two VAR checks, and one red card — making it as eventful as it was entertaining.
Barcelona began the match just as they ended it — with complete control. The opener came early through Fermin López after chaos in the Olympiacos box, sparked by a Lamine Yamal-led attack. Amid the confusion, López pounced on a loose ball and slotted it into the net.
Olympiacos took control for a spell after conceding, but despite several promising attacks, they failed to produce a final product. In the 37th minute, Barcelona struck again. López doubled his tally, finishing off an assist from 17-year-old La Masia product Drow Fernández, who was making just his second senior appearance. Barça went into halftime with a comfortable 2–0 lead.
The second half began with drama. Olympiacos striker El Kaabi headed the ball into the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside. However, VAR spotted a handball by Marcus Casado moments earlier, and the referee awarded a penalty. El Kaabi converted from the spot to make it 2–1.
From that point on, things went downhill for Olympiacos. Just minutes after scoring, they were reduced to ten men as S. Hezze received a second yellow card and was sent off. Olympiacos coach José Luis Mendilibar and Hezze both appealed for a VAR review, but the referee stood by his decision.
Then came the collapse. In the 64th minute, Barcelona were awarded a penalty, which starboy Lamine Yamal confidently converted to restore the two-goal lead. That was followed by three goals in the final spell of the half. Englishman Marcus Rashford scored two bangers in the 74th and 79th minutes, and between those strikes, Fermin López completed his hat-trick with a delightful finish.
With this dominant victory, Barcelona secured their second win out of three group-stage matches. Their next fixture will be against Club Brugge. Olympiacos, meanwhile, remain winless, having picked up just one point from three matches. Their next match is against PSV.
In the other early kickoff, Pafos FC and FC Kairat played out a goalless draw. Pafos were reduced to ten men early in the match after J. Correia was sent off in the 3rd minute.
