‘It’s Not a Derby Anymore’: Calicut FC’s Six-Goal Statement Leaves Malappuram Stunned in Malabar Derby
The Malabar rivalry may have brought thousands of supporters to Payyanad Stadium, but Calicut FC made sure the night belonged to them. A ruthless attacking display saw the visitors defeat Malappuram FC 6–2, turning one of the most anticipated fixtures of Super League Kerala into a remarkable statement of dominance.
The atmosphere around Payyanad Stadium on Sunday evening told its own story. Even before kick-off, the excitement surrounding the Malabar clash between Malappuram FC and Calicut FC was unmistakable. Supporters gathered in large numbers, eager to witness a contest that carries considerable footballing significance across the region.
Inside the stadium, the stands were packed. Outside, the excitement was no less intense. With tickets sold out, hundreds of supporters who could not secure entry gathered in front of large television screens installed around the venue, following every moment of the match. For many, standing outside the stadium was the only way to be part of the occasion.
But what unfolded on the pitch was far from the closely contested encounter many had anticipated. Calicut FC delivered a stunning 6–2 victory over Malappuram FC, producing one of the most emphatic performances of the Super League Kerala season.
For Calicut, it was more than just three points. It was a statement.
Five minutes that changed everything
The opening exchanges offered signs of an entertaining contest. Malappuram started with attacking intent, looking to make the most of their home advantage. An early opportunity fell to Mehdi, who received Bilal’s pass following a quick move down the left. His attempt from inside the penalty area, however, drifted narrowly wide.
Calicut gradually settled into the game, and the closing stages of the first half completely changed its direction.
In the 40th minute, Calwin Thomas opened the scoring after getting on the end of a loose ball. Just two minutes later, Alexis Gastón Sosa doubled the advantage, converting from a corner to put the visitors firmly in control.
Then came the third. Leonardo David do Espírito Santo found the net in the 45th minute, sending Calicut into the break with a commanding 3–0 lead.
Three goals in the closing five minutes of the first half had transformed the contest. Malappuram had entered the game with the backing of a passionate home crowd, but Calicut had taken control with remarkable efficiency.
Calicut refuse to slow down
Any hope of a Malappuram comeback suffered another blow almost immediately after the restart. Federico Herman Boasso Fleury scored Calicut’s fourth goal with a powerful effort from outside the penalty area, leaving goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh with little chance.
Malappuram captain Amadou Soukouna responded soon afterwards, reducing the deficit to 4–1 after following up on a rebound. The goal briefly offered the home supporters something to celebrate, but Calicut remained firmly in command.

Leonardo David added his second of the evening with a curling effort in the 74th minute, before Boasso completed his brace with another excellent finish four minutes later.
At 6–1, the contest was effectively settled. Malappuram managed to find another goal through Nedim Hadzic in stoppage time, but it did little to change the outcome.
The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 6–2 victory for Calicut FC. Leonardo David do Espírito Santo was named Player of the Match, while Boasso’s two-goal contribution further underlined the visitors’ attacking quality.
‘It’s not a derby anymore’
The result inevitably raises questions about the changing balance of power in the rivalry. For years, fixtures involving Malappuram and Calicut have carried the excitement and emotional intensity associated with regional football rivalries.
However, the scale of Sunday’s victory has given the conversation a different dimension.
Veteran Calicut FC player Prashant’s remark,

— Prashant, Calicut FC veteran
captures the confidence surrounding the Calicut camp after such a commanding performance. It is a statement that reflects the team’s belief, although the rivalry’s significance to supporters on both sides remains very much alive.
For Calicut, the result provides another reason to believe in their campaign. For Malappuram, it is a night that will demand reflection, particularly after conceding three goals in the closing stages of the first half.
Calicut move to the top
The victory takes Calicut FC to 14 points after six rounds, placing them at the top of the Super League Kerala standings. Malappuram remain on eight points in third place.
The two sides now turn their attention to their upcoming fixtures. Malappuram are scheduled to face Forca Kochi FC on Friday, 6 November, at Payyanad Stadium, with kick-off set for 7:30 pm.
Sunday’s encounter will be remembered not only for the six goals Calicut scored but also for the extraordinary atmosphere surrounding the stadium. The crowds, the sold-out tickets and the supporters watching from outside demonstrated the growing appeal of football in the region.
Yet, when the night was over, one thing stood above everything else: Calicut FC had made their presence felt in Manjeri, and they did so in emphatic fashion.
