AS Monaco have made a flying start to the 2026/27 season under new head coach Filipe Luís. The Brazilian manager, appointed in the summer for his first European coaching role, has overseen five wins from five competitive matches, immediately giving Monaco renewed optimism for the season ahead.

After victories over Górnik Zabrze in Conference League qualifying and Ligue 1 wins against Le Havre and Marseille, Monaco produced their biggest statement yet by coming from behind to beat Paris Saint-Germain 2–1 at the Parc des Princes. The result moved Monaco to the top of Ligue 1 with nine points from three matches, while PSG remain without a league win.

A Manager Already Making His Mark

The victory in Paris offered an early glimpse of Luís’ tactical flexibility. Monaco were comfortable allowing PSG to dominate possession, instead relying on defensive organisation and quick transitions. They had only 32% possession and four shots compared with PSG’s 23, yet still came away with all three points.

That adaptability has been one of the most encouraging features of Luís’ early tenure. Monaco have shown they can control games, as they did in the 2–0 victory over Marseille, but they are equally comfortable playing a more pragmatic style against stronger opposition.

Young forward Paris Brunner has also emerged as an important attacking figure, scoring twice against Marseille and adding another exciting dimension to Luís’ side.

Can Monaco Maintain the Momentum?

It is obviously too early to discuss a genuine title challenge, but the opening weeks have given Monaco supporters plenty to be excited about. Five wins, Conference League progress and a comeback victory over the reigning French champions represent an almost perfect beginning for Luís.

The real test will come with consistency. Maintaining this level over an entire Ligue 1 campaign, while balancing European football, will be considerably harder than producing an impressive opening month.

For now, though, Monaco have momentum, confidence and a manager who appears willing to adapt his tactics to every opponent. Filipe Luís could hardly have imagined a better start to his European coaching career.
