Substitute Davide Frattesi scored an 88th-minute winner as Inter Milan secured a vital 2-1 away victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night, April 8th. The result ends Bayern’s 22-match unbeaten home run in the competition, stretching back to 2021.

Bayern Munich dominated the opening half-hour, with Harry Kane striking the post early on. However, Inter took the lead against the run of play with their first shot on target in the 38th minute. Marcus Thuram cleverly flicked the ball into the path of Lautaro Martínez, who finished emphatically with the outside of his boot into the roof of the net.

The German champions appeared to have salvaged a draw when substitute Thomas Müller, who announced last week he will leave Bayern this summer after 25 years, scored from close range in the 85th minute following Konrad Laimer’s low cross.

But Inter responded almost immediately. A swift counter-attack saw Carlos Augusto deliver a cross for fellow substitute Frattesi to convert just two minutes before the end of normal time, snatching a crucial advantage for the Serie A leaders.

Inter now take a 2-1 lead into the second leg at the San Siro on Wednesday, April 16th.3 The winners of the tie will face either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals. Ironically for Bayern, this season’s Champions League final will be held at their own Allianz Arena on May 31st, a target that now looks more challenging after this first-leg defeat.
