Man City Sign Nico González from Porto
Manchester City have completed the signing of midfielder Nico González from Porto for a fee of £50 million. The 23-year-old Spaniard becomes City’s fourth signing of the January transfer window, following the arrivals of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis.
González, a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, has impressed during his time at Porto, making 68 appearances and contributing nine goals and six assists. His performances have attracted interest from several top clubs, but City have won the race for his signature.
City manager Pep Guardiola has been a long-time admirer of González, who is seen as a potential replacement for the injured Rodri. The Spanish midfielder’s ability to protect the defense and distribute the ball effectively makes him an ideal fit for Guardiola’s system.
“Nico is a very talented young midfielder,” said City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain. “He is an ideal acquisition for Manchester City.”
Nico González began his career at Barcelona, making his first-team debut in 2021. After a loan spell at Valencia, he joined Porto in 2023 for a fee of €8.5 million. His impressive performances in Portugal have now earned him a move to the Premier League.
“This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career,” González said. “I want to test myself in England. There’s no better club than Manchester City for me to do that.”
The signing of González will strengthen City’s midfield options, which have been depleted by injuries this season. He will provide competition for places and offer Guardiola tactical flexibility.
This signing highlights City’s ambition to compete on all fronts. They are currently second in the Premier League and challenging for the Champions League and FA Cup. The addition of González will bolster their squad and increase their chances of success this season.
