Real Sociedad Cruise Past Midtjylland to Reach Last 16
Real Sociedad secured their place in the Europa League last 16 with a 5-2 victory over Midtjylland in the second leg of their play-off tie at the Anoeta Stadium. The Spanish side, who held a 1-0 lead from the first leg, produced a dominant display to book their place in the next round.
Real Sociedad got off to a dream start, taking the lead in the fourth minute when Brais Méndez capitalized on a defensive error to score. Luka Sučić then doubled their lead with a well-taken finish, before Midtjylland pulled a goal back through a penalty from Adam Buksa.
Despite Midtjylland’s efforts to get back into the match, Sučić restored Real Sociedad’s two-goal advantage just before half-time, converting from close range after a corner.
Real Sociedad continued to control the game in the second half, with Midtjylland reduced to 10 men after Dani Silva received a second yellow card. Mikkel Oyarzabal then sealed the victory with a penalty, before Orri Óskarsson added a fifth goal in the closing stages.
This victory marks another step forward for Real Sociedad, who are enjoying a successful season under manager Imanol Alguacil. They will now face either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur in the last 16 of the Europa League, a tie they will be relishing.
Midtjylland, meanwhile, will be disappointed to have exited the Europa League. Despite their efforts, they were unable to overcome Real Sociedad’s quality and will now turn their attention back to their domestic campaign.
Real Sociedad will be hoping to continue their impressive form in the Europa League when they face either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur in the next round. They will be aiming to progress further in the competition and potentially challenge for the trophy.
