AC Milan suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to promoted side Cremonese at the San Siro on Saturday, a disappointing start to their Serie A campaign. Despite dominating possession, Milan’s defensive lapses proved costly, allowing the visitors to secure a rare victory on their return to Italy’s top flight.

Cremonese took the lead against the run of play in the 28th minute. From a corner kick, a defensive clearance fell to Alessio Zerbin, who whipped the ball back into the box for defender Federico Baschirotto to head home unmarked past goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Milan found an equalizer in first-half stoppage time. A clever chipped cross from new signing Pervis Estupiñan found Strahinja Pavlovic, who headed in from close range to make it 1-1.

However, Cremonese restored their lead in the second half through a moment of brilliance. In the 61st minute, Giuseppe Pezzella delivered a high ball into the area, which Federico Bonazzoli converted with a stunning overhead kick to seal an upset victory.

Milan’s Santiago Gimenez had an early effort ruled out for offside, and the Rossoneri were repeatedly thwarted by Cremonese goalkeeper Emil Audero in the second period, who made several key saves to preserve the lead.

In a separate match, AS Roma began their season positively under new manager Gian Piero Gasperini, securing a 1-0 home victory against Bologna. The winning goal came in the 53rd minute from Brazilian full-back Wesley Franca.
