Barca storm back to edge Benfica in nine goal epic
Barcelona produced a remarkable comeback from three goals down to snatch a dramatic 5-4 victory over Benfica in the Champions League. Despite two costly errors from goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and a hat-trick from the striker Vangelis Pavlidis, Barcelona fought back to secure a place in the last 16.
Benfica raced into an early lead through Pavlidis, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to give the hosts the advantage. Robert Lewandowski leveled the score from the penalty spot, but Szczesny’s howlers gifted Pavlidis two more goals, leaving Barcelona with a mountain to climb.
However, the Catalan giants refused to give up. Raphinha pulled a goal back in bizarre fashion when his attempted clearance rebounded off Trubin and into the net. Although Benfica restored their two-goal cushion through an own goal from Ronald Araujo, Lewandowski converted another penalty to set up a thrilling finale.
Eric Garcia then headed home a late equalizer, before Raphinha snatched the winner in the 96th minute, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack to leave Benfica stunned.
Szczesny, who came out of retirement in October, endured a nightmare first half, making two costly errors that gifted Benfica two goals. However, his blushes were spared by Barcelona’s remarkable comeback.
Despite the early setbacks and Szczesny’s errors, Barcelona showed incredible resilience and determination to secure a vital victory. Their attacking prowess proved too much for Benfica, with Raphinha and Lewandowski leading the charge.
Benfica will be left to rue their missed opportunity to secure a famous victory. Despite Pavlidis’ hat-trick and a spirited performance, they were ultimately undone by Barcelona’s never-say-die attitude.
The win guarantees Barcelona a place in the last 16 of the Champions League, while Benfica will need to fight for their place in the knockout stages in their remaining matches.
