Bayern Set Club World Cup Record with 10-0 Thrashing of Amateurs Auckland City

German champions Bayern Munich established a new tournament record with a dominant 10-0 victory over New Zealand’s Auckland City in their FIFA Club World Cup opener in Cincinnati on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

Substitute Jamal Musiala scored a second-half hat-trick, and veteran forward Thomas Muller added a brace as Vincent Kompany’s side completely outclassed the part-time outfit from Oceania. The result surpassed the previous biggest win in the competition’s history, Al-Hilal’s 6-1 victory over Al Jazira in 2022.

The disparity between the six-time European champions and the semi-professional Auckland side, comprised of teachers, students, and estate agents, is likely to fuel further debate about the new, expanded 32-team format of the tournament.

Bayern asserted their dominance from the outset. Kingsley Coman opened the scoring with a sixth-minute header, and Sacha Boey doubled the lead twelve minutes later. Former Crystal Palace forward Michael Olise made it 3-0, before Coman scored his second to put Bayern 4-0 ahead inside half an hour. Muller scored his first of the afternoon before Olise added another, giving the Bundesliga champions a commanding 6-0 lead at halftime.

Musiala, making his return from a hamstring injury as a second-half substitute, added a seventh before scoring his second from the penalty spot. He completed his hat-trick by capitalizing on a defensive error. Muller then scored his 250th goal for the club, converting a Serge Gnabry cross with two minutes remaining to complete the 10-0 rout.

While Musiala and Muller were prolific, it was Michael Olise who stood out in the first half with two goals and two assists before being substituted. In contrast, England captain Harry Kane was unable to get on the scoresheet, missing two clear opportunities before being replaced by Musiala on the hour mark.

Statistically, the match was entirely one-sided. Bayern Munich registered 31 attempts on goal, 17 of which were on target, while Auckland City managed only a single shot.

Auckland City will next face Benfica in Orlando on Friday, June 20, while Bayern Munich will take on Argentine giants Boca Juniors in Miami.
