Boca Juniors Sack Coach Fernando Gago After River Plate Defeat

Argentine giants Boca Juniors have dismissed head coach Fernando Gago following Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals River Plate in the ‘Superclásico’. The club confirmed the decision on Tuesday.

Mauricio Serna, a member of Boca Juniors’ Football Council, announced the departure, citing recent results. “We’re here to make decisions, and late last night, we found that there is no way for him to be our coach,” Serna stated. “We’re very grateful because he’s put in all his effort, but there are situations that have led us to make a final decision.”

The loss to River Plate compounded a difficult period for Boca, who were also surprisingly eliminated in the early stages of the Copa Libertadores by Peruvian side Alianza Lima in February – the first time a team from Peru had knocked Boca out of the competition.

Gago, a 39-year-old former Real Madrid and Argentina midfielder who also played for Boca, took charge last October, replacing Diego Martínez. He arrived midway through the Mexican season, leaving his role at Chivas Guadalajara.

During his tenure of just over six months, Gago coached Boca for 30 matches, recording 17 wins, 6 draws, and 7 losses. Boca Juniors will now begin the process of appointing a new head coach.
