Fiorentina has issued a strong condemnation of the racist abuse directed at striker Moise Kean following their 2-1 defeat to Inter Milan in Serie A. Kean, who has been in excellent form for Fiorentina this season, was targeted with a barrage of racist insults on social media after the match.
The club confirmed that they have reported the online abuse to the relevant authorities and expressed their support for Kean.
“The Viola stand with Moise Kean who was the victim of serious racial abuse after the match at Inter in Milan,” the club said in a statement.
Kean has been a key player for Fiorentina since joining from Juventus last summer. He has scored 15 goals in Serie A this season, including two in Fiorentina’s 3-0 win over Inter Milan in December.
His impressive performances have earned him a recall to the Italian national team, and he currently sits second in the Serie A scoring charts behind Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui.
This is not the first time Kean has been subjected to racial abuse in Serie A. In 2019, he was targeted by Cagliari fans, and Fiorentina themselves were punished with a suspended one-match stand closure in 2023 after their fans racially abused Kean and other Juventus players.
The persistence of racist abuse in Italian football is a serious concern, and Fiorentina’s strong condemnation of the latest incident highlights the club’s commitment to tackling this issue.
