Isco Returns, Spain March On: La Roja’s Squad for Nations League Final Four
After missing out on Euro 2024 due to injury, Isco earns a sensational recall to Spain’s squad for the UEFA Nations League Final Four, as La Roja prepares to face France in the semifinal.
After lifting the Euro 2024 trophy, Spain’s national football team is heading into yet another big challenge, the Nations League Final Four. But this time, there’s a story that fans can’t stop talking about. Isco, the Real Betis magician, is back in the Spain squad after six long years. And what a comeback it is!

Isco’s Long Road Back
Football is full of stories about players who rise, fall, and rise again. But Isco’s journey is something special. The 33-year-old midfielder last wore the Spanish jersey in 2019 during the Euro 2020 qualifiers. Since then, many thought his international days were over. But his incredible season at Real Betis, where he helped the team reach the UEFA Conference League final, changed everything.

Isco was even called up for Euro 2024 but missed out due to a heartbreaking late injury. This time, there’s no stopping him. His performances in La Liga’s second half were among the best, and Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has rewarded him with a well-deserved recall.
What’s at Stake?
Spain enters the Nations League semi-finals full of confidence. They face France on June 6th in Stuttgart, a clash between two football giants. If they win, they’ll meet the winner of Germany vs Portugal in the final. After becoming European champions just weeks ago, Spain is eager to add another trophy to their cabinet.

New Faces and Familiar Names
The squad has a fresh mix of youth and experience. Gavi, one of Barcelona’s brightest stars, is back after recovering from a serious cruciate ligament injury. His return adds creativity and energy to the midfield. Young centre-back Pau Cubarsí also returns after an injury, reclaiming his place from Inigo Martinez.
Another big name is Dean Huijsen, recently signed by Real Madrid. The young defender keeps his spot in the squad, edging out Raul Asencio. Barcelona dominate the selection, with six players in the lineup, showing just how strong their young core is.

Who Misses Out?
Not everyone made the cut, and some omissions raised eyebrows. Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, considered by many as the best goalkeeper in La Liga this season, has been left out. De la Fuente has chosen to stick with the tried-and-tested trio of Unai Simón, David Raya, and Álex Remiro.
Ferran Torres, who has been in brilliant form for Barcelona, also misses out. He recently underwent surgery for appendicitis, and the coaching staff felt it was too soon for his return. Ayoze Pérez, Bryan Zaragoza, and Marc Casado are other notable players who didn’t make the squad.
Interestingly, Rodri, a key part of Manchester City and Spain’s midfield, is also not included, despite returning to fitness last week.
